Federal Government Asks Churches, Mosques, Others To Submit Guidelines For Reopening

He urged other organisations and communities to come up with similar guidelines to expedite the process of safely reopening the economy. T he Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, has asked professional groups and faith-based organisations, including churches and mosques, to submit guidelines for reopening to the NCDC to review and advise. He spoke during a press conference of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Thursday. “This is what we’ve been advising every society, organisation, community, be it faith-based, cultural-based, professionally based, to come up with guidelines for themselves. Fatal Accident: One dead, two injured as tanker rams into car, bus on Lagos bridge

An accident on the Otedola bridge, Lagos State, yesterday claimed the life of an unidentified woman. A tanker loaded with petrol on Thursday rammed into a bus and a car on the Otedola Bridge. The Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said that two persons were severely injured in the accident, which occurred at about 8:30a.m. Oke-Osanyintolu said that the agency’s officials immediately raced to the scene to rescue the victims and remove the vehicles from the road to ease traffic. According to him, a female adult lost her life to the accident, while a male adult and a child got injured. He said that the body of the deceased had been taken to a mortuary, while the injured were being treated. An eyewitness said: “The brake of a tanker fully loaded failed and rammed into an inter-state Mazda bus. Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) has given details of Thursday’s National Economic Council (NEC) meeting. The first-ever NEC teleconference was chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.  State Governors and relevant government officials joined virtually.  In a statement, Mustapha said during the meeting, the issue of alignment of their state level actions with the guidelines issued was emphasized. “Similarly emphasized is the need for states to diligently implement and enforce compliance. Reps demand 40-year socioeconomic plan from FG

The House of Representatives has asked the Federal Government to develop a long-term socioeconomic plan for Nigeria. The lawmakers adopted a motion at the plenary on Tuesday, entitled, ‘Need for Nigeria to Develop a Long-Term Social and Economic Development Framework Vision’. The House urged the Federal Government to develop a ‘SMART 40-year Strategic Economic Master-Plan and Development Strategy’ and an economic framework to implement the strategy. The House also urged all relevant agencies to articulate a long-term agenda anchored on the government economic development strategy framework. The lawmakers mandated its Committee on National Planning and Economic Development to ensure compliance with the resolution. Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 pandemic says Nigeria would have failed its next generation if it does it learn from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to build enduring and sustainable institutions. Speaking at the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 pandemic, its chairman and Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha, who made the assertion, also observed that the virus has exposed the weaknesses in all sectors of the country and the world. The Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who disclosed this in a communique issued at the end of the group’s eighth teleconference yesterday, said that the consultation must include a public hearing to gather public opinions and concerns. According to Fayemi, the governors, after receiving an update on the proposed bill, raised concerns on the lack of consultation with state governments who are at the forefront of the epidemic and resolved that the bill should be stepped down until an appropriate consultative process is held. Nigeria: FEC Approves Revised 2020 Budget

The Federal Executive Council has approved the review to the 2020 budget and the Medium Term Expenditure Framework for 2020-2022 as recommended by the ministry of finance. The budget has new benchmarks which now includes $25 per oil barrel, and a target production rate of 1.94 million barrels per day and then an exchange rate of N360 to $1, Finance minister Zainab Ahmed said while briefing State House correspondents on Wednesday. Ms Ahmed said the revised budget now amounts to N10.5 trillion, a difference of about N71.5 billion when compared to the initial approved budget. "This is because, as we cut down the size of the budget," she noted, "we also have to bring in new expenditure previously not budgeted, to enable us adequately respond to the COVID-19 pandemic." Ms Ahmed said while the federal government will fund the budget by N5.158 trillion, the deficit from N5.365 trillion will be financed by both domestic and foreign borrowing. Already both the S...

Kano mysterious deaths: Ekhomu rejects Presidential Task Force verdict

President of the Association of Industrial Security and Safety Operators of Nigeria, AISSON Dr. Ona Ekhomu, has faulted the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 verdict which attributed the mysterious deaths in Kano State to the CoronaVirus disease, saying the methods used to arrive at the conclusion did not conform with forensic pathology methodology. Ekhomu, stated rather, that, the panel should have conducted conventional autopsies on the bodies to determine Coronavirus disease, saying, “the so-called verbal autopsies are unscientific, have no validity, no reliability and certainly are not reproducible”. The security expert further stated that “ relying on the age of victims was mere profiling (a class characteristic) and did not constitute an individualized explanation of the deaths. COVID-19: FG sends fresh directives to banks as customers violate guidelines

Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Adeniyi Adebayo, has asked commercial banks and other financial institutions, to open up all their branches to customers. Adebayo, speaking at the weekly briefing of the Emergency Operation Centre of the Committee on Sustainable Production and Delivery of Essential Commodities During COVID-19 on Thursday, said it would assist the government’s efforts in preventing the spread of COVID-19. Following the relaxation of a five-week lockdown on Monday, May 4, there have been rowdy scenes at banks and other financial institutions. Customers in Lagos and Abuja, have been seen violating the set guidelines, which includes social distancing and use of face masks at public places. Most banks also limited their operations to a few branches after the lockdown. FG waives import duty on medical supplies

As part of efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has ordered the immediate evacuation of all imported medical equipment from Nigerian ports. This is even as the President has given a blanket waiver of Customs duty on medical supplies. Disclosing this on Tuesday, via his official  Twitter  handle, the Special Assistant to the President on Digital and New Media, Tolu Ogunlesi, stated that in addition to the import waiver, Buhari had also directed the Nigerian Customs Service to implement expedited clearing of all imported healthcare equipment, medical and pharmaceutical supplies at the nation’s ports. The Speaker of the House of Representatives,Femi Gbajabiamila, said on Tuesday the Control of Infectious Diseases Bill would undergo public hearing. The Speaker stated this while addressing members of the House and members of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 in Abuja. He said that stakeholders’ contributions would be sought to make improvements to the bill before being reviewed and debated by the Committee of the Whole. Kano Mysterious Deaths Caused by Coronavirus – Official

The mysterious deaths recorded in  Kano  state, Nigeria, in recent times is said to be caused by coronavirus, an official of the Presidential Task Force Committer on COVID-19 has confirmed. Over 640 persons, including prominent figures, reportedly died in the previous week in Kano from previously unidentified illness. The illness has now been confirmed to be Coronavirus. Dr. Nasiru Sani Gwarzo, leader of the Presidential Task Force Committee on COVID-19 said that the virus was the cause of the mysterious deaths recorded in Kano State in recent days.  The state government had previously  denied  links of COVID-19 to the deaths but a survey based report carried out by by Yusuf Yau Gambo, a lecturer at the department of mathematics at Yusuf Maitama Sule University in Kano  revealed  otherwise.
